It looks like New York might become a big market for electronic cigarettes. Mayor Bloomberg is banning smoking from city beaches and from pedestrian walkways and areas around Times Square…

Talk about kicking butt in Times Square.
Smokers will not be able to light up when hanging out along pedestrian walkways across the five boroughs, including in car-free areas of Times Square, as part of a broad expansion of the city’s smoking ban to parks, beaches and boardwalks,
officials announced today.
The proposed ban means no smoking if you’re sitting on the traffic-free Broadway plaza at the Crossroads of the World, in all parts of Central Park or along the famous Coney Island boardwalk.
“The science is clear: Prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke – whether you’re indoors or out — hurts your health,” Mayor Bloomberg said in announcing the widespread ban. “Today, we’re doing something about it.”
Now is the time for you New Yorkers to start switching to electronic cigarettes – at
least for your outdoor and public smoking…

In the latest news in the electronic cigarette industry, the FDA has moved against five e-cig companies. They did so for violations in the forms of unsubstantiated claims, and poor manufacturing practices.

The truth is that it sounds like a bigger deal than it is, but it does mean that the FDA is watching the industry closely. These five companies were using the ecig as distribution channels for delivering drugs in liquid form that are unapproved, in addition to problems in the manufacturing process.
The companies receiving warning letters today are:
E-CigaretteDirect LLC, Ruyan America Inc., Gamucci America (Smokey Bayou Inc.), E-Cig Technology Inc. and Johnson’s Creek Enterprises LLC
